Former President Joe Biden Diagnosed with Aggressive Prostate Cancer
WILMINGTON, Del. — Former U.S. President Joe Biden, 82, has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer that has metastasized to his bones, according to a statement released by his personal office on May 18, 2025. The diagnosis followed medical evaluations prompted by increasing urinary symptoms and the discovery of a prostate nodule during a routine examination.
The cancer is characterized by a Gleason score of 9, placing it in Grade Group 5, which denotes one of the most severe forms of prostate cancer. Despite the seriousness of the diagnosis, the cancer is hormone-sensitive, offering a range of treatment options. Biden and his family are currently consulting with his medical team to determine the most effective course of action.
This diagnosis comes after a series of health-related events for the former president. In February 2023, while still in office, Biden had a cancerous lesion removed from his chest. Prior to his presidency, he underwent surgeries to remove several non-melanoma skin cancers. His health has been a topic of public discussion, particularly during his 2024 reelection campaign, which he ultimately withdrew from amid concerns about his age and cognitive abilities.
The announcement has elicited responses from political figures across the spectrum. Former President Donald Trump expressed his and Melania Trump's sadness over the diagnosis via Truth Social, wishing Biden a swift and successful recovery. Former Vice President Kamala Harris also extended her support, stating, "Joe is a fighter – and I know he will face this challenge with the same strength, resilience, and optimism that have always defined his life and leadership."
Biden's diagnosis has also brought renewed attention to prostate cancer, which is the most common cancer among men in the United States and the second leading cause of cancer death. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 8% of new prostate cancer diagnoses involve advanced-stage disease where the cancer has spread beyond the prostate.
As Biden and his family navigate this challenging time, the public and political leaders alike have rallied in support, reflecting the former president's enduring impact on the nation.
