Vending Machines Vandalized in Kamakura Seaside Park; Police Investigate Theft

KAMAKURA, Japan — Authorities are investigating a case of vandalism and theft after three vending machines were found heavily damaged at Kamakura Seaside Park in Yuigahama on the morning of April 13, 2025. The machines' cash boxes were forcibly pried open, and the money inside was stolen. A fourth vending machine, which dispensed ice cream, remained untouched.

The incident was discovered around 5:00 a.m. by a local resident taking a morning walk, who promptly notified the police. Upon arrival, officers found the vending machines with significant damage, indicating the use of tools to access the cash compartments. The exact amount of money stolen has not been disclosed.

Notably, the park lacks security cameras, which may have facilitated the crime. The Kamakura City Green Park Division, responsible for the park's maintenance, expressed concern over the incident, stating that such vandalism is unprecedented in the area.
