UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson Fatally Shot in Targeted Manhattan Attack
By Harry Negron, December 4, 2024
Brian Thompson, 50, CEO of UnitedHealthcare, was fatally shot outside the New York Hilton Midtown hotel at approximately 6:46 a.m. The assailant, described as wearing a dark hoodie and gray backpack, approached Thompson and fired a single shot to his chest before fleeing eastbound on foot. Thompson was transported to Mount Sinai West Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The New York Police Department has classified the incident as a "targeted attack." Surveillance footage shows the suspect lingering near the hotel prior to the shooting, suggesting premeditation. The suspect remains at large, and authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward.
Thompson, a two-decade veteran of UnitedHealth Group, had led its insurance division since 2021. Known for his low public profile, he was instrumental in advancing the company's shift to value-based care. At the time of the incident, Thompson was attending UnitedHealth Group's annual investor conference, which was subsequently canceled.
The motive for the attack remains unclear. Thompson's wife disclosed that he had received threats potentially related to insurance disputes. Investigators are exploring both professional and personal avenues to determine the cause.
UnitedHealth Group expressed profound sorrow over Thompson's death, stating, "Brian was a visionary leader whose commitment to improving healthcare touched countless lives. We are cooperating fully with law enforcement during this difficult time."
The healthcare and business communities are reeling from the loss, with colleagues and industry leaders offering condolences. Flags at UnitedHealth Group's headquarters have been lowered to half-staff in Thompson's memory.
As the investigation continues, authorities are appealing to the public for assistance. Anyone with information is urged to contact the NYPD's Crime Stoppers hotline.
