New York Stock Exchange Extends Trading Hours to Meet Global Demand

By Harry Negron, October 27, 2024

In a significant shift aimed at broadening accessibility, the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) announced plans to expand trading on its Arca platform to 22 hours per day. The new schedule, subject to regulatory approval, will allow trading from 1:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. Eastern Time, accommodating investors across multiple time zones and increasing opportunities for those in Europe and Asia.

This move mirrors rising demand from retail traders, many of whom began actively participating in the stock market through platforms like Robinhood, which recently launched 24/5 trading hours. NYSE’s Head of Markets, Kevin Tyrrell, noted that this expansion underscores the growing influence of global markets on U.S. trading and marks a shift toward meeting demand for more flexible trading schedules.

With the new schedule, NYSE Arca, a leader in ETF trades, will continue to support a robust $27.7 billion in daily transactions for ETFs and $21.8 billion in corporate stock trades. The exchange will file updated rules with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission for final approval.
