Idaho Police Shooting of Autistic Teen Sparks National Outrage

A 17-year-old Puerto Rican teenager with autism is in critical condition after being shot multiple times by police in Pocatello, Idaho, during a mental health episode. Victor Perez, who is also nonverbal and diagnosed with cerebral palsy, was shot nine times by responding officers on April 5 after they were called to a disturbance involving a potential domestic dispute. According to law enforcement, Perez was holding a large knife and did not comply with commands to drop it. Officers opened fire shortly after arriving on the scene.

Family members and advocates say the teen posed no immediate threat and believe the situation could have been de-escalated. Cell phone footage from a bystander reportedly shows officers firing their weapons within seconds of exiting their vehicles. Victor’s family confirmed he has undergone multiple surgeries, including a leg amputation, and remains in a coma on life support.

The shooting has drawn national attention, especially from disability rights groups and racial justice advocates. Critics argue that police lacked the necessary training to handle individuals with neurological conditions and failed to use non-lethal methods or provide adequate time for compliance.

Local officials have launched both an internal and third-party investigation into the use of force. The Pocatello Police Department has placed the officers involved on administrative leave. Police Chief Roger Schei stated the incident is under active review, emphasizing the complex and fast-moving nature of the encounter. However, community leaders and civil rights groups have called for full transparency, an independent investigation, and systemic reforms.

Protests have erupted in Pocatello and neighboring cities, with demonstrators demanding justice for Victor and accountability for what they describe as excessive and avoidable violence. A GoFundMe campaign organized by his family has raised thousands of dollars to support medical expenses and long-term care.

This incident has reignited broader concerns about police responses to mental health crises and the disproportionate risks faced by people of color and those with disabilities in encounters with law enforcement.
